Clipper City is one of the most underrated breweries out there—I think largely because of their absolutely horrific product names.  There’s Clipper City—that’s the brewery.  Then there’s Heavy Seas, which is the brand name.  Then this is Black Cannon, which is the product name.  And it’s fucking awesome.  And nobody will know because of their convoluted marketing.

Traveling.  Recommended, a lovely amarillo hop with what I believe is a pinch of simcoe.

21st Amendment Back in Black

Since ChurchKey and Meridian Pint started carrying this tasty little beer I’ve been enjoying it on tap, wondering when it was going to come out in cans.  Lo and behold, the answer is tonight.  The packaging is some of the most gorgeous I’ve seen and also proved to be very difficult to photograph.  That’s Paul Revere on the can, being a badass.

Just a short rundown of the beer, since I was too busy oogling the cans to write comprehensive thoughts:

Having had it on tap, can has a lot more coffee.  Malty deliciousness, the hops peak through and finish.  Feels lighter than on tap, the hops more reserved.  A very fantastic mix of stout malts and IPA hops.  I’m glad they released it in cans as I’d only had it draft prior.

Central City Brewing Red Racer India Pale Ale
This has been my go-to beer since I tried it.  It’s fucking magnificent.  I was not at all expecting this.  The can has a sort-of cliche woman riding a bike, it doesn’t look like a credible can of beer.  Also, it’s from Canada, which is pretty much a barren wasteland aside from Unibroue.
From the first whiff I was in love.  Citrus, piney; amarillo hops are my favorite and this just stinks of them.  The dryness is there, it smells stiff and fruity and delicious.
Sip it: holy crap, fruit explosion!  It’s all over the front of the palate, not at all overpowering but just delicious.  Grapefruit, oranges, oof.
Some credit has to go to a can.  There are a lot of really shitty beers in cans (I’m talking to you Butternuts) but when beers in cans are good (hey Oskar Blues) they’re fantastic.  I am yet to try their Pale Ale only because when I’m tempted to buy it, it’s sitting next to the IPA and I can’t justify not grabbing it.
Here’s the deal: drink this beer.  Buy a six pack and drink it.  It’s effing amazing and has become one of my absolute favorite beers.  Let it heat up a bit, it gets even tastier.  It’s not too heavy for a hot summer day, it’s not too light for the cold of winter.  This is a phenomenal beer and you’re missing out until you try it.

BrewDog Punk IPA
Smells lagery—some simcoe but with a citrus smell.
Very sweet, dry, grows on you.  Very bitter lemony-grapefruit.  Long linger, pilly aftertaste at the back of the palate.  This aftertaste goes on for days, very bitter, not quite stale, very citrusy but certainly a pilly simcoe hop.  Incredibly, super-long aftertaste.  Longest aftertaste ever?  So much bouquet it made me sneeze.  The British influence is definitely there with the dryness, has a certain ESB flavor.  The simcoe is the star of the show here, though they do a great job of throwing in some more citrusy malts to round out the hop end.  Malts are overpowered by the hops.  It’s very drinkable though it feels heavier than its marked 6% ABV.
This does a really great job at completely covering one’s palate.  It’s thorough and a total kick in the jaw, I’m not certain it’s overpowering but it’s certainly overt.  At the $12-13 I paid for a fourpack I’m not certain it’s something worth trying again, but it’s imported so I’m certain they’re not ripping me off.
